Start?
I havn't got Prophecies yet and I was looking at a map of Tyria, and I just wondered where the players start and where the port is that allows you to travel between Cantha, Elona and the Battle isles.

Characters that begin in Prophecies will start the game in Pre-Searing Ascalon. This is a separate area from the main game, and as such there is no storage and you cannot return once you leave. After completing primary quests, the character is taken to Post-Searing Ascalon City. At this point, by following missions and primary quests as usual, the character progresses through the campaign. Lion's Arch in Kryta is the Port City.

What they said. And they "start" the real game at Ascalon which is the dark-brown area below the Charr Homelands.

Depends if you get it run or not, from starting pre, if you get a run to LA for cheap, about 30 maybe 45 minutes tops, if you screw around with the quests and missions maybe 3-5 hours or more, depending on how much you lke questing, exploring and whatnot.

getting from pre-searing to L is relatively easy actually.
Seeing as how the difficulty of the game doesn't really kick into high gear until the Crystal desert.
I have been able to make it to La in under 3 hours doing the main quests and missions. u

The OP's question has been answered and discussion is rather off-topic.
